Best Linux Distros 2014

Best Linux Distros 2014

If you're looking for the best Linux distros around, on this page you'll find a collection of every Linux distribution that should suit your needs.

Most Beautiful Linux Distro: Bodhi Linux

This is an easy choice: Bodhi Linux. Bodhi Linux uses the Enlightenment window manager, which has always occupied a unique niche. Enlightenment is beautiful, lightweight, and extremely customizable. Its flexibility has worked against it in the past, because when you install the stock Enlightenment it takes a fair bit of work to set it up as it's more of a framework than a finished desktop environment. The Bodhi team have done a great job of taming Enlightenment and giving users a beautiful, ready-to-use implementation.

Best Enterprise Linux Distro: SUSE and Red Hat

This is a tie: SUSE and Red Hat. I can't pick one over the other because they're both rock-solid, they're excellent community members, and they have similar product lines.
SUSE has always been a top enterprise Linux distro, but it is not so well-known in North America. They hold a number of bragging rights: first mainframe Linux and most popular mainframe Linux with 80% market share, half of the world's largest supercomputers run SUSE, most widely-used commercial enterprise Linux distribution in China (more than China's Red Flag Linux), and it dominates in retail--even Walmart uses SUSE Linux Enterprise Point-of-Service.
SUSE and Red Hat both have formed large networks of key partnerships with enterprise vendors like IBM, HP, Intel, Cisco, Dell, Fujitu, and SAP. These are essential to penetrating the enterprise and staying there, and we also enjoy a trickle-down benefit of features, hardware support, and wider acceptance of Linux at all levels. Most Linux enterprise growth has come at the expense of proprietary Unix, and not so much from Microsoft Windows. But Linux has exercised considerable influence in the datacenter by being open and supporting open standards, and providing interoperability even when proprietary competitors were actively trying to foil it. Now we see vendors who used to be hostile to Linux are now open to it, and have become contributors, and Red Hat and SUSE both deserve credit for helping to make this happen.

Most Important for the Future of Linux Distro: DouDou

Where do Linux gurus come from? From baby newbies. How do baby newbies become gurus? From using DouDou Linux. DouDou is an excellent, safe platform for children to explore and learn skills the fun way. It comes with the superior Gcompris and Childsplay suite of educational software, multimedia production software, and challenging brain games. DouDou is simplified and locked-down, and includes Dan's Guardian for some protection against Internet badness. DouDou is also an good platform for adult beginners.

Best Laptop Linux Distro: Lubuntu

Again I must go with a member of the Ubuntu family. Lubuntu flies on older, less-powerful laptops. Lubuntu is Ubuntu-ized LXDE, which is one of the lightest-weight graphical environments you can use without sacrificing a lot of functionality. You'll get longer battery life, and have more system resources available for more demanding applications such as audio recording or graphics editing.

Best Desktop Linux Distro: Xubuntu

People seem to forget that Ubuntu is much larger than the Unity desktop, and judge all of Ubuntu by that alone. I don't much care for Unity, but I do like the whole *buntu ecosystem. You can reliably upgrade to new releases, which is not true of a lot of desktop-oriented Linuxes. It's engineering brilliance to support multiple distros like Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Server, and all the rest from a common core and common repos, and the only distro with bigger repos is Debian, so you can almost always find what you want. If you can't then you have the giant thundering herd of Ubuntu PPAs (Personal Package Archives) to get software from.

Linux Mint 13 Xfce edition Officially released | Best Desktop Linux Distribution

--> The Linux mint team has announced the availability of the Xfce edition of Linux Mint 13, codename Maya. From the release announcement : "The highlight of this edition is the latest Xfce 4.10 desktop, which features the following improvements: online documentation; application finder; multiple rows and deskbar mode in the panel; actions plugin; MIME type editor; single-click operation, automated background image cycling and thumbnail rendering on the desktop; edge-tiling in the window manager. In the past, the xfapplet plugin made it possible for Xfce users to run GNOME applets within the Xfce panel. After talking to the MATE and Xfce developers, we updated this plugin and it now supports MATE applets. Among the many MATE applets that can now run in Xfce, mintMenu is probably the most popular. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others".Ubuntu developers spread this message to the tech world.Ubuntu is sponsored by Canonical PVT Ltd.The curremt version of Ubuntu is 12.04 called as Precise pangolin.Kubuntu is nothing but Ubuntu core with KDE interface. So there is nothing much difference in the architecture but the look and feel are different.
Ubuntu 12.04 uses Ubuntu's own Unity interface while Kubuntu uses KDE 4.8 version as the default desktop inerface.KDE environment has improved a lot after thousands of bug fixing. It is graphically more attractive to the users especially who are coming from the Windows or OS X platform.Unity also has improved a lot but it has faded after the release of Gnome 3 since many of the Ubuntu users started using Ubuntu with gnome 3.Lubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin uses the ultra fast LXDE desktop environment.LXDE is a newbie in the Linux but it has become popular due to its simplicity and speed.LXDE enviroment is the fastest one among the others and it is very simple and looks good.
Xubuntu 12.04 is based on XFCE desktop environment and it is faster than Gnome 3, Unity and KDE 4.8 .Xubuntu doesn't look great but it is worth for the speed it gives.Lets take a look at the features all these Ubuntu 12.04 variants.
New features of Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin

  • · Unity 3D interface 5.10
  • · Unity 2D interface 5.10
  • · GNOME 3.4.1
  • · Linux kernel 3.2.12
  • · X.Org 7.6
  • · Xorg Server 1.11.4
  • · Upstart 1.5
  • · GCC 4.6.3 toolchain
  • · Python 2.7.3 and Python 3.2.3
  • · Compiz Fusion 0.9.7.6

New features of Kubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin

  • Plasma and Applications 4.8
  • Amarok 2.5
  • Rekonq and OwnCloud Updates
  • Software Center and Updater
  • New Applications like Calligra Suite, KDE Telepathy
  • Kubuntu Active Technology Preview
  • Possible switch to the LightDM login manager
  • Accessibility improvements
  • CJK improvements
Kubuntu Active is a new Ubuntu flavour for tablets. It uses Plasma Active and the new UIs designed for tablets

 kubuntu 12.04

Kubuntu distribution is very powerful but not gained much popularity like its partner ubuntu. But Kubuntu developers are still trying hard to make it to the top of the kde distros.Current version is 12.04 which has longterm support for 5 years.
System requirements for kubuntu 12.04
Minimum processor speed 1GHz
Minimum RAM 384MB recommended is 1 GB
website : http://www.kubuntu.org

Lubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin
website http://lubuntu.net
Lightest and fastest among all the Ubuntu sisters. Unfortunately, it is not an LTS, as it has only 18 months of support, just like a regular release. If you have an old computer with low specs, Lubuntu is the perfect option for you. It is rich in pre-loaded softwares and you can install what-ever softwares you like from the Ubuntu repository.

Xubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin
website http://xubuntu.org
It is nothing but Ubuntu core based on extremely light XFCE desktop and super fast. Those who have low RAM old systems, Xubuntu is for them. Also, for those who hate heavy interfaces likeUnity,KDE or Gnome. It comes with Adobe Flash & GIMP pre-installed, which is a good idea by the Xubuntu developers. I installed Libreoffice along with Abiword and Gnumeric as Libreoffice offers more functionality. Repository wise no worry - all the Ubuntu softwares are available all of these Ubuntu siblings.

Conclusion

Who's the winner among the different Ubuntus?
It is difficult to say since it depends on your system, needs etc. If you have an old system with low specifications then Lubuntu or Xubuntu can be a better choice.

If you have a modern computer with average specs, Ubuntu and Kubuntu would be the preferred distro. If you like eye-candies like windows or OSX then Kubuntu will be a better choice.I feel the same with Gnome 3 experience on Ubuntu. If you are a beginner and do not want lot of customization and all definitely you can go for Ubuntu.

linux distro with LXDE - Lubuntu
Lubuntu is ubuntu plus lxde.Lxde is very fast compared much heavier interfaces like gnome and kde.Since lxde is under development you may not be satisfied if you are migrating from gnome or kde.But it is really very fast.
